Today officially marks the Summer Solstice, the first official day of summer. Here in the Arizona desert, it has felt like summer for quite a while already, but there is still something special about this day. It signals longer evenings, backyard gatherings, road trips, lake days, beach dreams, open windows, cold drinks, and the songs that become part of our memories.
To celebrate, we put together a playlist of 55 summer songs spanning multiple generations and genres, clocking in at approximately 3 hours and 35 minutes of music. Click on the blue link at the bottom to take a listen. Some of these songs are obvious summer classics. Others simply make us feel like summer. They carry core memories, emotions and moments that instantly transport us somewhere warm and familiar.
Whether you listen from beginning to end or simply jump around to a few favorites, we hope there is something here for everyone.
🎵 Why Chris Cornell Opens This Playlist
The first song on our Summer 2026 playlist is "Seasons" by Chris Cornell, and that placement is no accident.
Chris remains one of our all-time favorites here at Old Dogs Rock. We miss his voice, his songwriting, his honesty and the way he could capture a feeling with just a few words.
"Seasons" felt especially poignant to begin this summer journey. The song carries reflection, change, growth and the passing of time—everything that summer seems to remind us of as another season arrives.
For us, it was the only choice to start this playlist.
🌞 A Few New Favorites
While many of these songs are classics, we also included a few newer additions.
One that has already become a favorite around here is "Summer" by Tasha. It perfectly captures that carefree feeling of warm weather and long days.
We also added NEVUSSIDE & Chima Anya's "The Sun Is Shining" as a special ode to the sun itself. Consider it a musical thank-you note to the giant glowing star that makes all of this possible.
🎹 Two Steve Winwood Songs Because One Wasn't Enough
You'll notice two songs by Steve Winwood on this list.
We tried to pick just one.
We failed.
Steve Winwood's music has been part of our summers for decades. His songs remind us to slow down and focus on the things that truly matter: love, connection, gratitude and the simple joy of being alive.
His song "The Finer Things" has always resonated deeply with us. Lyrics like "the golden dance" and "drink your cup of laughter" are beautiful reminders that life moves quickly and that joy should never be postponed.
Those messages feel especially important these days.
☀️ A Tribute to Bradley Nowell and the New Era of Sublime
We included two Sublime songs on this playlist.
The first is the classic "Santeria."
The second is "Until The Sun Explodes."
The pairing is intentional.
It honors the legacy of original Sublime frontman Bradley Nowell, while also celebrating the band's continuation through his son, Jakob Nowell, who is helping carry that legacy forward for a new generation of listeners.

🎸 Van Hagar Forever
One song that immediately takes us back is "Summer Nights" by Van Halen.
Or, as many of us still lovingly call them during that era: Van Hagar.
Sammy Hagar's years with Van Halen created some incredible summer-driving, lake-day, windows-down music and "Summer Nights" remains one of the best examples.
Turn it up loud and suddenly you're back on the water.
🌎 "It's a Beautiful World"
One of the most uplifting songs on the playlist is "Beautiful World" by In Paradise & Two Better Friends.
The lyric that grabbed us immediately:
"Ohhhhh, it's a beautiful world. Ain't nothing on a screen is ever gonna beat this view. And I just want to share it with you."
We couldn't agree more.
The world can be noisy. It can be chaotic. But sometimes all it takes is stepping outside, watching a sunset, listening to a song to remember just how beautiful this place really is.
🚗 Summer Nights and "Drive"
Every great summer playlist needs a nighttime driving song.
For us, that's "Drive" by Incubus."
It feels like late-night highways, warm air through open windows, distant city lights and forgetting everything else happening in the world for a few minutes.
When that song comes on, we're singing every word.
Every single one.
❤️ Father's Day, Music, and a Personal Dedication
This year's Summer Solstice also falls on Father's Day.
So before anything else: Happy Father's Day to all of the wonderful Dads out there.
This Father's Day is different for us. We lost our dad this February.
He was a singer. An old-school crooner. Music was part of who he was.
His nickname for me was "Be-Bop," short for "Be-Bop-A-Lula" by Gene Vincent.
We shared a love of music and a love of singing.
His influence is one of the reasons artists like Peggy Lee, Ella Fitzgerald and so many others found their way into my life.
I was fortunate enough to sing to my dad during his final moments and to be there when he took his last breath.
This playlist is dedicated to him.
🤠 From Rock Girl to Country Fan
Another deeply personal song on this list is "Be As You Are" by Kenny Chesney.
As a young rock girl, I used to wake up every morning to country music playing on the kitchen radio. My parents listened every day to country, it was their favorite.
Naturally, I made sure everyone knew how silly I thought their music was. Only Rock music existed. The teenage angst was big sometimes.
Fast-forward a few decades and here I am appreciating not only country music but the history, artistry, songwriting, collaborations and community within the genre.
Funny how life works.
Today I love music from every genre and every generation.
And that's exactly what this playlist celebrates.
