From Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers to The Dirty Knobs: Mike Campbell's Mission of Mercy Proves the Fire Still Burns

Joined by fellow Heartbreaker Steve Ferrone, Mike Campbell & The Dirty Knobs return with an album filled with storytelling, a psychedelic surprise, and a few memorable collaborations. Proving once again that great songwriting doesn't retire.

Their fourth studio album, Mission of Mercy, was released on June 12, 2026. What started as a side project has now grown into Mike Campbell's primary creative outlet.

So who exactly are Mike Campbell & The Dirty Knobs?

Mike Campbell is best known as the longtime lead guitarist and songwriter for Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers. Born in Jacksonville, Florida, Campbell helped write many of the songs that became part of the soundtrack of our lives, including "Refugee," "Here Comes My Girl," "You Got Lucky," "Runnin' Down a Dream," "The Waiting," "A Woman in Love (It's Not Me)," "Jammin' Me," and more.

His songwriting talents reached far beyond The Heartbreakers. Campbell wrote or co-wrote songs for other artists including Stevie Nicks' "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around," "If Anyone Falls," and "The Dealer." He also wrote Don Henley's hit "The Boys of Summer," one of the most recognizable songs of the 1980s.

After Tom Petty's passing in 2017, Campbell gradually stepped into the spotlight as a frontman. On Mission of Mercy, he handles lead vocals and guitar while continuing to prove that he's much more than one of rock's greatest guitar players.

Alongside him is Steve Ferrone, longtime Heartbreakers drummer and one of the driving forces behind this project. Ferrone's powerful drumming has been heard on albums by Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Eric Clapton, Duran Duran, and countless others throughout his legendary career.

Rounding out the lineup are Chris Holt on guitar, keyboards, and vocals, and Lance Morrison on bass. Holt is a respected Texas musician and songwriter who has worked with artists including Bob Schneider and Don Henley. Morrison brings decades of experience as a bassist, having worked with artists ranging from Don Henley to Alanis Morissette and many others. Together, the four musicians have developed a chemistry that feels like a true band rather than a side project.

Now before we get into our favorite songs, we need to confess something.

We have a HUGE sense of humor here at Old Dogs Rock.

Every single time we hear the name Mike Campbell & The Dirty Knobs, our minds immediately go to the movie The Other Guys. If you've seen it, you know exactly where this is going. Will Ferrell's character drives a Prius that gets stolen and eventually ends up becoming home to a group of homeless men known as "Dirty Mike and the Boys."

We are not saying there is any connection whatsoever. We are simply saying that every time we hear "The Dirty Knobs," our brains immediately replay those hilarious scenes and we start laughing.

In fact, we think a future music video should begin with all four band members climbing out of a Prius before launching into a song. We feel this absolutely has to happen.

If you've seen The Other Guys, you're probably laughing right now too.

Now on to a few of our favorite songs on this album.

The first is the title track, "Mission of Mercy." There is a psychedelic sound here that we have been missing. They bring it back to us like a core memory. While recording the album, Mike Campbell rediscovered an old Ampeg Rocket amplifier he used during the early Heartbreakers era. The amp had been sitting in storage for years. After plugging it in, Campbell realized it was exactly the tone he had been searching for. That vintage sound became part of the DNA of this album and especially shines on "Mission of Mercy." It already stood out to us, but knowing that story makes it even more special.

Another favorite is "My Mama Told Me." We simply don't hear enough harmonica in modern music, and it adds a great feel to this song.

"Armageddon" is another standout. We love everything about the sound of this one—the guitars, vocals, bass and drums all come together perfectly. We love the lyric line, "But the sun won't fade away."

Then there's "Bongo Mania," a high-energy track featuring Kate Pierson of The B-52's. It's fun, unexpected and impossible not to enjoy.

"I Remember" is another highlight. Mike Campbell originally wrote this song on piano rather than guitar, something he doesn't often do. That different approach gives the song its own unique personality and feel.

Other songs we found ourselves returning to include "Wrecking Ball" with its fantastic guitar riff, "No Regrets," which reminded us of classic Tom Petty in all the best ways, the catchy "Done to Me," and "Let Me Back In My Dream."

We would also be remiss if we didn't mention "More Than Gold," featuring Morgane Stapleton. Morgane is far more than just Chris Stapleton's wife. She is a respected Nashville songwriter and vocalist who has written songs recorded by artists including Carrie Underwood, LeAnn Rimes, Kellie Pickler and others. One of her best-known songwriting credits is Carrie Underwood's "Don't Forget to Remember Me." She is also the harmony voice heard on many Chris Stapleton recordings and performances, including "Tennessee Whiskey," and she co-produced his Grammy-winning 2023 album Higher.

One thing we loved about Mission of Mercy is that each song feels a little different from the one before it. The album never settles into one lane for too long. There are roots-rock moments, Americana influences, psychedelic touches, great storytelling, memorable guitar work and a few surprises along the way.
