June turned into another fantastic month for music. Some of these songs arrived as stand-alone singles, while others gave us an early taste of albums still on the horizon. From classic rock legends and country storytellers to metal icons, soulful blues singers and artists just beginning their journey, there's been something for everyone—and we wanted to share a few of our favorites with you.
Here at Old Dogs Rock, we aren't music reviewers—we're simply lovers of music. We appreciate the heart, creativity and courage it takes to write a song and put it out into the world. Some of these artists have been part of our lives for decades, while others are completely new discoveries. 🌌 One Album We Keep Coming Back To...
One album we've been playing quite a bit around here is Muse's The Wow! Signal. Two songs from this album made our June playlist—"Cryogen" and "Unravelling." Both have been getting plenty of play in our house, and if you're looking for a place to start with this album, we'd definitely recommend giving those two a listen. This has quickly become one of our favorite albums.
One of the biggest surprises for us this month was The HU. If you haven't heard them before, they're a Mongolian folk rock/folk metal band that blends traditional instruments and throat singing with modern rock. It's a sound that's completely different from anything else in our playlist, and songs like "Lost Soul" and "The Men" immediately grabbed our attention. Sometimes discovering a band you've never heard before is half the fun.
Seeing Europe releasing new music also brought back plenty of memories. Most of us immediately think of their song "The Final Countdown," but they're proving they still have plenty left in the tank. Their new single "One on One" is the latest preview of their upcoming album Come This Madness, arriving September 25. It's always fun hearing bands that helped define the '80s continue writing new chapters.
Speaking of the '80s, we couldn't help but think about Rudy Sarzo this month. Rudy has been one of rock's most respected bass players for decades, playing with Quiet Riot, Ozzy Osbourne, Whitesnake, Dio, and several other legendary bands. If you spent any time in front of MTV back in the day, you've almost certainly watched him perform. It's always nice seeing musicians from that era still making great music.
One song that caught our attention for a different reason was Paula Cole's "Mississippi." The song comes from recordings that had been sitting in her personal vault for years before finally being released. It's thoughtful, emotional and unmistakably Paula Cole. We should mention that it does contain some explicit language, but it's an interesting glimpse into music that almost never reached listeners.
We're also loving what Chaka Khan has been doing lately. "Chakzilla" is a lot of fun, and if you're looking for another great track, don't miss "Boogie's In My Soul," where she teams up with Snoop Dogg. Hearing someone who's been making incredible music for decades continue to experiment and have fun is pretty inspiring.
If you're a Duran Duran fan, don't stop after listening to "Free to Love." The version on our playlist is the original recording, but the entire release is actually built around different remixes of the same song. We had fun bouncing between them, and chances are you'll end up with a different favorite than we did.
Then there's Pitbull and Lil Jon, who reminded us that sometimes music is simply supposed to make you smile. "Satalanaaa" is energetic, catchy and impossible to sit still through. Roll the windows down, turn the volume up and enjoy yourself.
We also wanted to shine a little light on Cassidy Daniels, a country artist from British Columbia whose music continues to gain attention. Some people may have first heard her through the series The Road or a small part on Dutton Ranch, and now she's back with "Crazy Love," another heartfelt country song that's well worth a listen.
Another voice we always enjoy is Elles Bailey. Her bluesy, soulful style has a timeless quality to it, and her newest song "Back to You" is another reminder that great songwriting never goes out of style.
And finally... Pink Floyd.
One of the coolest releases this month wasn't actually a new song—it was an old treasure finally getting an official release. "Pigs on the Wing (8-Track Version)" comes from the original 1977 Animals album, but this special version was once available only on the rare 8-track cartridge. Because of the way those tapes had to be formatted, Pink Floyd recorded an additional guitar solo by touring guitarist Snowy White to connect the two halves of the song. For decades it became a collector's curiosity, and now everyone finally gets to hear it. We absolutely love when music history gets a second chance.
